»We had so much talent to be for something. And have spent our lives having to be against something.«
— from Günter Gaus' interview with Gustav Gründgens, 1963
Klaus Mann's ‘Mephisto. Novel of a career’ is set amidst the acting community from 1926 to 1936. The semi-documentary story about the prominent German actor Gustav Gründgens, alias “Hendrik Höfgen”, follows the decisions and fates of individual artists whose lives and work are thrown into turmoil by the rise of National Socialism.
Based on the novel, the team embarks on a search for missing colleagues in Siberia. For silenced colleagues in Boston, US. Drinking coffee with cultural workers in Saxony-Anhalt. Chats with Georgia and Turkey.
And asks the question – ahead of time: Who will we have been?
